Starting a family, with a baby girl

What would you think is the best way to celebrate your one year anniversary? Some couple celebrate by taking a vacation, others have a nice dinner out together, while a select group of people do something really special. Kim and Grant were in the select group of people that did something really special…they had a baby! They celebrated their first anniversary in the hospital with their little baby girl. Not many couples can say that. Kim reached out a few months before she was due to discuss the options for newborn photos. We went over what was included in the gift certificate they received from us, since we did their wedding photos. Then we also talked about the options of them coming to the studio or us traveling to their home. We are happy to do whatever it easiest and most comfortable for mom. Kim was happy to come to our studio and arrived ready to take some family photos. She even brought a few outfits for her daughter to wear. A mom that is really on top of everything! We started off with family photos so we could get an idea of how baby girl liked to be held, swaddled, etc. She was not excited for her photo debut. Kim realized that is was getting close to the time she usually eats so it was best to let her have something to eat. She was well aware that mom did not give her all the food she normally gets. She settled for a moment but then decided that she needed to eat the rest of it. No problem, best to have a full belly when posing for photos. That worked perfectly because the rest of the session she just let us pose her and get some wonderful images. Kim and Grant even said “yep, that’s the one that would look great hanging on the wall in her room.” They hadn’t even seen the photos, but knew they were going to love them. We look forward to working with them again as baby girl grows, hopefully they become members of our birthday club. Great job and good luck selecting your favorite photos!   #ravettaphotography #stlphotographer #newbornsession #studiosession #newborngirl #babygirl

Newborn baby girl is here and everyone is excited.

We receive referrals from past clients all the time. This one was a bit surprising because it came from a wedding client we worked with many years ago. She is now a photographer herself but mainly does weddings. When her good friend needed a newborn session she immediately mentioned us. Wow, even another photographer would refer us to friends. Sarah wanted to get on our schedule as soon as possible to get those snuggle newborn baby photos. Also, Sarah wanted to get some photos with the grandma’s while they were in town. We don’t often have a generational photo during a newborn session. It was very nice to see the family gathering in our office for Sophia’s newborn session. She is one very loved little girl. We wanted the family to relax while they were with us so we started off with all the photos that included adults. Sarah had a list of combinations, which was helpful so we didn’t forget anything that was important to her. Sophia slept the entire time we passed her from arms to arms during those photos. It was then time for her solo photos, she slept during those as well. She was just an angel the entire session. We were able to incorporate the bows mom brought with her. It’s great when parents come with stuff from home. Of course, we have lots I our studio to use but personal items give the photos a more unique look. Mom knows she would have a hard time selecting images so she picked our digital package right from the start. That includes all the images we take during a session. That was a great decision since it would be difficult to narrow them down. The best part of the session was when grandma came in the room and told Sophia she was going to be a star since she was doing everything perfectly. You’re a star for sure Sophia – the star of your family!   #ravettaphotography #stlphotographer #newbornsession #studiosession #babygirl

Family photos for the holidays

Some people may not know but we do all types of photography including school portraits. This year we added another school to the many that we have been working with over the years. There was a little girl who was absent for school picture day that came into our office for a retake. Mom and dad enjoyed the very short experience they had with us. They made the decision it was time for a family portrait. Of course, they then contacted us to get on the schedule as soon as possible to take the holiday photos.

It had been a very long time since they had had a portrait taken together. Brynn was such a sweet little girl, she made the entire session a breeze smiling and posing the whole session. We were able to take some holiday photos on our yearly set, as well as, some other backgrounds. Having a plain background means the photos could be hung in the house all year.

Brynn was very inquisitive about all of the things we have in our office during the photo session. The way that the lights moved around the different background options, our prop room, and what was inside of our wrapped presents. We will give you a hint – they’re empty boxes. Originally mom had thought she just wanted a few photos but after the full session before they were getting ready to leave she was considering the option of purchasing the download to all the photos.

It is wonderful to see after a session with a great family the opinion of “only a few photos to thinking I’m going to need all of these” is just wonderful. We then discussed perhaps an outdoor session the next time that they do family photos or even just photos of Brynn. Surely, they will continue to use our services. It would be an honor to work with them again in the future.

Pick a theme and stick to it

We have been working with this family since the children were very, very, young. They do annual photos typically some sort of theme. One we remember from years ago was the Wizard of Oz. We did the photos in the park and it was so much fun with each family member dressed up as a character. All of the children have gotten older some are out of school while others are still in college, but this annual tradition is really wonderful. They continue getting together to make these photos happen is just very special. Sometimes it is a simple type of a theme, like a sports jersey or it can get a little more elaborate like steampunk or this year the day of the dead theme. The family started the process of getting ready about 8:45 in the morning doing hair and getting the Day of the dead makeup painted on their face. That is commitment!  Everyone always arrives to the studio prepared with costumes props and even make sure to include something for their dog to wear that is in line with the theme. These photos have  decorated their Christmas card each year and I will bet when people open them they are excited to see what theme was chosen this year. We sometimes try to get the photos taken outside but since the best time of year tends to be around Thanksgiving, when all the kids are in town from school, it is chilly outside so we work with the background options we have in our studio. We know that the costumes and props will really bring any background choice to life. We thank them for continually contacting us each year so that we can create these memories for their family. We will see you next year and we can’t wait to hear what the theme is.

Family session in the fall

We see this family a couple times of year. The like our mini session option because it is perfect to just get a few updated photos throughout the year. With two girls that just smile the entire session they usually end up with more than a few photos! This session was specifically for Stella’s one year birthday but when they arrived she was asleep so we did a few photos of big sister. Gigi just posed, smiled and gave us cute photos right away. We all know that when a baby gets up from a nap we don’t exactly know what baby we will get. Will we get a well-rested baby with smiles, a straight faced baby since they are now at a park and didn’t fall asleep there, or do we get a crabby baby since the nap was only about 20 minutes. We hit the jackpot!! Stella was smiles, smiles, smiles. Seriously, do these parents even know how special these two little girls are? They smile, they pose, they pretty much do whatever we want and it is amazing! In additional to some photos of big sister, family and the girls together we knew that we wanted to focus on Stella since she was celebrating her 1 year birthday. It is crazy to think that we took newborn photos a year ago, wow that went very fast. Anyway, when Gigi wasn’t in the photos she did a good job of helping her sister look at the camera. She really adores her little sister, we hope that feeling continues as she gets bigger. Perhaps, this family is so great in front of the camera because we have known each other for years, not only from the many sessions but also as friends. When you think about it the more you see your photographer the better and more “real” the kids become during the sessions. So we suggest that everyone joins the birthday club so we can watch your kids grow! #ravettaphotography #stlphotographer #oneyear #birthdayclub

Girls in the park

A perfectly wonderful day at the park with the perfectly wonderful family. There are sessions that may seem challenging to parents trying to get the kids to cooperate, however we only need one split second to get the photo. We couldn’t stop smiling when we reviewed these photos, just so many to choose from in there. We have done many sessions together and when baby sister arrived the sessions changed a bit. Getting two children to stay in one spot adds another element to the fun. Now that the weather was nice we did the session outdoors, this makes everything a bit easier and harder at the same time. The open area gives the kids a chance to run around instead of having to stay in one spot like when they are in the studio. At the same time, running around keeps everyone on their toes the whole time, but makes it much easier for us to work with the kids in finding a location they want to sit.
We started off with some photos of the girls together because we knew that was something we wanted to accomplish for sure…well we got it! Family photos were great too because the smiles just kept coming from everyone. We did have to put in some bubble guppy trivia, but whatever works it fine with us. We wanted to make sure that each girl got a chance to have photos by themselves. Since Clare is old enough to tell us what she likes we took her photos in front of a door. She wanted “to see who was home” Despite the smiles we got I think she was a bit upset nobody answered the door, haha! Hannah didn’t get to pick her spots for photos however she showed us that no matter where we put her she was going to smile about it. I have no idea how mom and dad are going to narrow down from this session. Get them all!!

A new family has been born

It seems like only a few weeks ago we were working with this couple in the park for their maternity session. Now here we are doing newborn photos. Baby Bobby had decided he was going to come just a little bit earlier than expected. Mom said it almost seems like he was kicking his way out of there because he was ready to greet the world. We didn’t doubt that for one moment because Bobby is surely strong. Throughout the session he was awake and kicking his legs the whole time. We had asked mom if he ever stayed still throughout her pregnancy and the answer was “not very much.” We do say having newborn photos within the first two weeks is the best because after that the babies are more active and alert. Bobby was already both of those at only eight days! Mom and dad said they totally understand the parents that don’t realize how quickly the first weeks go by and trying to get in before the two weeks is a challenge. But they wanted to try to get in as soon as they could so that they could get these precious newborn photos as he is already changing from day one. The images we captured of the family, mom and Bobby, as well as, dad and Bobby are ones that they will cherish forever. Everyone looks so happy! There even a few photos of body giving us a little smile, which will be great to show family and friends. With many out-of-town family the new mom and dad have had a bit of a chance to relax with just the three of them before some people come in town to meet the new addition. At that point we’re sure that they will welcome some additional hands on deck. Babies change and grow so fast, as mom stated during the session, having these newborn photos and various sessions throughout the first year are really great way to capture all of the little faces. We hope to work with Bobby again in the future and perhaps have a new birthday club member

Classic Pink and Blue for the family

It’s been a while since we have seen this birthday club family. Basically the whole world, including our studio,  shut down in 2020 so we skipped the birthday photos last year. And this year we met outdoors so the boys could have a little bit more fun running around the park, instead of photos at home like we have done in the past. They have really grown so much since the last time! When we met them at the park the boys were definitely ready for photos with smiles and talking to us right away. No shy children here, they were very good listeners as well as directors to each other. We got started with some family photos first and then because the boys were old enough to get those great smile looking at the camera photos we threw in some silly photos. We think that you need to let the children have some fun as well as doing some of these post pictures. The boys enjoyed playing in the flowers at the park with a  peekaboo game behind them and then, of course, showing off their best pose at the end of the session. These poses gave us some cute personality photos! The images we captured of the family interacting and the kids with mom show how much these little ones love their parents. It was great to see everyone and I know that we captured some perfect images to hang in the house. As we walked around the park mom said that they were leaving the same day to go on a little trip with the boys but they did not know about it. We really hope that they had a great time because they truly deserve it after all of the great work that they did during your photo shoot

A generation photo of the girls

We met these girls at the park for a wonderful generation photo. Grandpa decided that he wanted his daughter, wife and granddaughter to have a photo taken together for Mother’s Day. What a wonderful idea, we think all families should do this. After rescheduling due to rain we were blessed with a nice cool cloudy day, perfect for photos. Savanna, the youngest of the generations, was all smiles the entire session. It was very easy to get many photos! The matching shirts were a wonderful touch to add some personalization to these memorable photos. After photos of all the girls together we also added in some of Savannah and Nonna, as well as, Savannah and mom. We got so many options in such a short mini session time slot! We had originally wanted to do some pictures of Savannah splashing in the water since it was nearing summer and she is learning to sit up. However, the water was looking a little rough so we skipped that and took some photos with the blooming flowers instead. A perfect spot for a little girl in the park. Honestly these girls couldn’t have gotten any better photos –  cooperation, happy baby, beautiful day, everything was in their favor which is why they decided to get all of the digital images instead of having to choose. We recommend these types of generation photos for all families because looking back at these is going to be extra special. Of course there are lots of photos of baby but mom is often not in the photos and surely grandma is not either so having the three of them together in the same photo is truly just priceless. We will work again with this family sometime soon and know that little Savanna will be a happy baby during all of her sessions.

New mom and dad are in love

We often do photographs for multiple family members and this past December we were at the home of one of our clients doing some Christmas photos of the family. We noticed an announcement for a baby on the refrigerator. We have also done this family members wedding! We were very excited to hear that they were expecting. We knew that when the baby arrived we would hear from them to set up a newborn session. The moment they got home from the hospital they did just that – they called the office and decided to have us come out the following week to take the newborn photos at their home. It’s always a personal touch to do the sessions in the nursery because we are then able to incorporate some of the blankets and decorations that are present in the home. We often come with multiple items posing pillows, blankets, wraps, baskets, and all sorts of things that we can use for the photos but we do like using personal items to make the photos unique. These items also make baby feel comfortable. When I arrived I had all of my usual items and settled in the nursery. Baby Jacob was wide awake which gave us some great family photos with mom and dad. We typically start with mom and dad photos so that they can then relax while we finish up with the individual photos a baby. Jacob got in his mind that he was not going to go to sleep for his photo shoot. He stayed awake most of the time and when we tried images of him unwrapped mom mentioned that he really doesn’t like to be naked and he told us that right away! We were able to get many photos of him dozing in and out of sleep as well as wide awake, as long as, he was wrapped or had clothes on. We did joke a little bit that as much as those naked photos are cute it might be a good thing that he wants to keep his clothes on. During the session we chatted about how well Jacob is doing with his sleep and feeding he is such a great little baby. Mom and dad are very lucky to have such an easy-going little guy. This being the first baby for mom and dad they were overjoyed by all of the wonderful images that I captured. We look forward to capturing more memories of baby Jacob in the future and at some point maybe even a photo of all the cousins together #ravettaphotography #newbornsession #stlphotographer #nurseryphotos #babyboy
